The astrology Spread is a pull of 12 cards. It starts at the 8 o'clock with Aries, and ends with Pisces. Each card represents an area of life. Its purpose is to give the reader or person being read for a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, and the world at large (which is why it is both deeply personal as well as universal). Many people do this spread at the beginning of the year to help guide and set intentions. Others practice it monthly.
For my senior thesis, I chose to give myself a reading using this spread and then reimagine the 12 cards I pulled in my own illustration style. The synopsis of the reading, however, would be expressed physically as a tufted rug.
The rug is the synopsis of this reading. It's imagery is reminiscent of the digital illustration, but for the rug I chose to highlight symmetry in the border and accents. The outline of the main shape is similar to that of a butterfly, a creature that goes through many phases of transformation, with two hands blended together in the center cupping a star, or a smidge of hope for the time to come. The tulips in the corners are placed for image connection but also as a signifier of spring, a season where anything once dead or dormant grows again. Those were my intentions with this rug.
